Atlanta - Former US president Mr Jimmy Carter said on Tuesday he believed President Clinton had "not been truthful" to a grand jury over his affair with Ms Monica Lewinsky.
"As one of the very few leaders who have served in the White House, I have deplored and been deeply embarrassed by what has occurred there," Mr Carter told Emory University students in his first public comment on the Clinton scandal.
Mr Carter, like Mr Clinton a Democrat, had maintained a strict silence on the matter until Tuesday night.
