The President, Mrs McAleese, yesterday opened the 15th National Tree Week in Newcastle West, Co Limerick. She said this year's theme is "Broadleaf Your Horizon". Up to 30,000 trees will be planted during the week and over 300 events will take place throughout the State.
The success of Ireland's first Tree Week in 1984 led to the establishment of the Tree Council of Ireland, a voluntary organisation representing 35 private and public groupings concerned with the promotion of trees. The council has been supported strongly by the Forest Service, FAS, Coillte and Pitney Bowes.
