Indonesia's two major parliamentary parties today called for President Abdurrahman Wahid to face an impeachment hearing, bringing the downfall of the Muslim cleric a step closer.

"The Golkar faction hopes that the special [impeachment] session can find the right solution to save our nation from catastrophe," MP Ms Evita Asmalda from the former ruling Golkar Party told parliament.

Earlier, the country's largest party, the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P) of Vice President Mr Megawati Sukarnoputri recommended President Wahid face the impeachment hearing in the top legislature over two graft scandals.PDI-P and Golkar together hold a majority in parliament.

Parliament is expected later today to formally announce its decision on making the request to the supreme People's Consultative Assembly.
