Princess Anne was yesterday fined £400, with £30 costs, and given five penalty points on her licence for driving at 93 m.p.h. - nearly 30 m.p.h. above the speed limit in Gloucestershire.

She pleaded guilty in a solicitor's letter to Cheltenham Magistrates but said she thought a police car had been escorting her Bentley past a line of traffic. She had been on her way to an official engagement last August. The court clerk said when the police car pulled out behind her and flashed its blue light, she thought it was a sign acknowledging that it was following to escort her.

Princess Anne was in Derby yesterday - opening a new £16 million police station. She was taken on a tour of the new building, including the 39-cell custody suite.
