A Catholic bishop claimed yesterday that for the first time Ireland has the financial resources to tackle the problems of the disadvantaged, and priority should be given to those with disabilities, prisoners, Travellers, and asylum-seekers.

Speaking at Knock Shrine, Co Mayo, the Bishop of Elphin, Dr Christopher Jones, said :"Maybe, for the first time , we might stop and give priority to those who never have enjoyed a slice of the cake but who have always been forced to feed on crumbs from their master's table."

Addressing pilgrims on the seventh day of the annual Knock Novena, Dr Jones mentioned the plight of the Travelling community. "We are delighted to welcome Travellers in baptism into the local Christian community as brothers and sisters, but if someone proposes accommodation or educational facilities near us we will march in protest," he said.
