Two prison officers arrested yesterday as part of an investigation into the smuggling of drugs and other contraband in prisons have been released.

A Garda spokesperson said today that the men were released from detention yesterday evening at 6pm.

The prison officers, aged 34 and 37, were arrested after detectives swooped on a number of houses near the Portlaoise and Midlands prisons and seized small quantities of cocaine and cannabis.

A total of nine homes were searched and prison officers' cells and lockers in the two jails were also checked in the operation which involved 50 Garda officers.

The two men were questioned at Newbridge Garda Station under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.
