A Dublin prisoner who is already serving 20 years for raping a woman is to be sentenced today for raping another sex offender in a prison cell in 1996.
It was the first case of "prison rape" to be reported and successfully prosecuted in the Irish courts in recent years. Anthony Cawley's sentence hearing was scheduled for yesterday in the Central Criminal Court but it was adjourned to today when Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins will be available to deal with it.
In February, Cawley (31) pleaded guilty to rape of a 27-year-old remand prisoner in Arbour Hill Prison on September 24th, 1996.
Cawley, who is being held in Wheatfield Prison, is serving a 20-year sentence which was imposed by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 1987 for the rape of a woman and robbery. Four months later, he received a concurrent 10-year term in the Central Criminal Court for attempted murder.
