A prisoner who escaped from a holding cell in Dublin's Four Courts on Monday was recaptured yesterday and taken back to jail.
Gardai on the beat in Christchurch yesterday morning received a tip-off that William King had been seen near Francis Street. Gardai spotted him near St Nicholas's Church and arrested him after a brief chase. He was returned to Mountjoy Prison.
King (24), who was in the Four Courts on Monday on a bail application, got out of his cell by smashing a window and forcing his way through iron bars which had already been sawn through.
Gardai believe the bars had been sawn through by accomplices of a major criminal who had been due to appear before the High Court that day were it not for an unforeseen problem with a jury.
King was serving a six-month jail sentence on a larceny charge.
Inquiries were started on Monday as to how the criminals managed to get into the court complex. There were also concerns about why King was allowed to be in the cell without prison officer supervision.
