A new commission which will make recommendations intended to promote the use of private rented accommodation was announced yesterday by the Minister for Housing and Urban renewal, Mr Robert Molloy.
Mr Molloy said the commission aimed to improve security of tenure for tenants, maintain a balance of rights and obligations between landlords and tenants and increase the supply of rented accommodation.
He said the recommendations of the commission should enable the private rental sector to develop to its maximum potential and be seen as an "option of choice", rather than as a tenure of transition before home ownership or social housing.
Mr Tom Dunne, of the Faculty of Built Environment, Dublin Institute of Technology, is chairman of the commission.
