The epic war film Saving Private Ryan took two top Golden Globe honours on Sunday night, but two rival pictures also won major awards, indicating this year's Oscar battle could be a fight to the finish.
Saving Private Ryan, about a US platoon searching for a soldier behind enemy lines during the second World War, received best motion picture drama award, while its director, Steven Spielberg, won the best director's statue.
But summer hit The Truman Show brought a best dramatic actor Globe for comedian Jim Carrey, beating Ryan star Tom Hanks. And Carrey's co-star, Ed Harris, won best supporting actor award.
The surprise comedy hit, Shakespeare In Love, walked off with the best comedy film award, best screenplay and best actress in a comedy for its star, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays an aristocrat whose love inspires the Bard to make major changes to a play he was writing, tentatively called Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter.
In two other top categories, newcomer Cate Blanchett won best actress in a film drama for her title role in the historical drama Elizabeth, and the Brazilian film Central Station was named best foreign film.
Veterans Gregory Peck, Faye Dunaway and Michael Caine won special awards.
