The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) has warned that cuts proposed in the numbers of language support teachers could prevent children from non-English speaking backgrounds from integrating into the wider community.

The McCarthy report suggested that 6,390 jobs from the education sector ought to be cut, which would represent a saving of €734.9 million for the State.

Out of these, it was suggested that 1,000 language support teachers would lose their jobs, representing a saving of €21 million.

TUI deputy general secretary Annette Dolan said yesterday such cuts would lead to “ghettoisation”.
