The prosecution case into the death of Evelyn Joel (58), closed yesterday, the court having heard from more than 40 witnesses in the trial.

Eleanor Joel (37), and her partner Jonathan Costen (39), of Cluain Dara, Enniscorthy, are pleading not guilty to unlawful killing on January 7th, 2006. They are alleged to have unlawfully killed Evelyn Joel by neglect. They are also charged with reckless endangerment.

The trial heard yesterday Eleanor Joel told gardaí in an interview she was “just sorry, sorry I didn’t do anything sooner” when questioned on the neglect of her mother. When a garda put it to her she neglected to give her mother food and drink, she replied “yes”. The trial at Wexford Circuit Court is ongoing.
