Protest as hospital extension lies empty

A protest at the delay in opening a new €16 million wing at Cork University Hospital will take place on Monday.

A protest at the delay in opening a new €16 million wing at Cork University Hospital will take place on Monday.

The protest is being organised by members of the Labour Party in Cork as part of the party's nationwide campaign to highlight health issues over the coming months.

Cllr John Kelleher said the unit at Cork Regional Hospital was an extension of the A&E department.

"It was completed about seven months ago but has remained closed because the Government has not provided funding for equipment and staffing," he said.

This was an unacceptable situation and they wanted to keep the heat on the Government and the Minister for Health, Mr Martin, to increase funding for resources and staff, he said.

The protest would be attended by members of the Labour Party and its public representatives in the city to let people know that they were continuing to campaign on this issue and other health concerns in the area.

The protest will take place between 9.30 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the entrance to Cork University Hospital on the main road.

A Department of Health spokeswoman said yesterday that the Department was in the process of providing funding to the Southern Health Board for equipment for the unit.

"The health board will have to commission the equipment and then check it out as it is quite complex, but once it is in place, we will then proceed to staff it."
