A group of 20 walkers yesterday began a 500km march from Malin Head in Co Donegal to Dublin in protest at the Government’s austerity plans. They hope to arrive on March 31st to coincide with Fine Gael’s ardfheis.

The group, Donegal Action Against Austerity, includes unemployed builders, housewives and even a schoolboy. One of the organisers, unemployed builder Joe Murphy from Culdaff, said: “This is our way of letting people and the Government know that we are not happy at how our country and its people are being run into the ground.”

The group will march through a number of towns including Donegal town, Sligo, Boyle, Carrick-On-Shannon, Mullingar and Leixlip.
