Delmas - A South African court gave a suspended sentence to a white farmer for firing a shot that killed a black baby in a freak ricochet, provoking outrage from the baby's mother and protesters.
Nicholas Steyn (43) received a five-year jail sentence suspended for three years. The ruling means he will not go to jail if he stays out of trouble for the next three years. "The sentence is nothing," the dead baby's mother, Violet, said outside the court in Delmas, a small farming town about 65 km east of Johannesburg.
