Parents of children attending some Dublin schools located close to mobile phone masts are lobbying for stricter guidelines on where masts may be sited.
In a petition handed in to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment yesterday, the parents said they felt masts should not be located within a 200-metre radius of schools.
They believe emissions from the structures could pose a threat to their children's health.
After the petition was handed in, parents from Blackrock and Clontarf protested outside the Dail.
"We believe there is an urgent need to exercise real caution in relation to siting base stations near schools where children are gathered in numbers for extended periods of time," Ms Melanie Taylor, a mother of children attending Guardian Angels' School at Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, said.
She said a mast had recently been erected less than 200 metres from Guardian Angels' primary school and was due to be switched on soon.
