PROVISIONS validating at least 57 marriages where the required three month notification was given to the wrong register office were approved by the Seanad yesterday.

The Minister for Equality and Law Reform, Mr Taylor, said the measures deal with a relatively small number of couples who gave notification in error to a registrar for a district other than the district in which their marriage was to be solemnised. "In those cases it is reasonable to assume that it was the intention of the parties concerned to comply with the law."

He said that since the introduction, on August 1st, 1996, of the notification requirement, which is provided for under the Family Law Act 1995, there have been very few difficulties.
