Detectives carried out searches on both sides of the Border today in a bid to disrupt a gang running an illegal waste operation.

Garda officers searched premises as part of the offensive against organised criminals based in the North.

The gang is also suspected of stealing expensive plant equipment and money laundering, police in Belfast confirmed.

A spokeswoman said: "Police have carried out a series of searches across England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland today.

"A total of 28 searches have been conducted connected to illegal waste, high value plant theft and money laundering."

No arrests have been made.
