The PSNI today appealed for calm amid nationalist concerns about a protest staged by loyalists.

Police in riot gear were called into the Silverstream area of north Belfast at about 10pm last night to prevent some 300 Ulster Defence Association (UDA) supporters from entering the loyalist Westland Road where a rival breakaway faction has been based.

Nationalists were also concerned about the loyalist gathering, with Sinn Féin claiming some residents felt intimidated and fled their homes.

Police monitored the crowd, which was addressed by loyalist representatives and dispersed peacefully around 1am.

The incident followed a stand-off on Friday involving supporters of the UDA leadership and a faction loyal to Andre and Ihab Shoukri, who were expelled from the terror group five weeks ago.

A shotgun, ammunition and petrol bombs were seized during that stand-off in the Tyndale Gardens and Tiger's Bay areas.
