Police in Northern Ireland yesterday arrested a woman on suspicion of wasting police time after reports of a baby falling into Belfast Lough were found to be false.

An extensive land and sea search for the baby was called off yesterday afternoon.

The woman (37) was rescued from the sea on Wednesday evening, 15 minutes after she fell from a Stena Line ferry making its way toward Belfast port.

After inquiries with the woman and her family, the PSNI said the report of an infant also falling overboard was “incorrect”.
