Police in Belfast have intervened in a band parade in aid of the tsunami disaster after an alleged breach of the North’s parade rules.

A police spokeswoman said the intervention took place after a "suspected breach of the Parades Commission determination occurred". A source said there was a breach of the agreed route of the parade by the loyalist Whitewell Defenders flute band.

Chief Superintendent Mike Little, DCU commander for North Belfast said: "The organisers of today’s parade been spoken to by police and evidence has been collected.

"Police will be reporting the actions of those involved to the DPP with a view to possible prosecution," he added.

In its consideration on the parade, the Parades Commission decided it was necessary to place certain conditions on the parade because of "the background of continuing local community tension."

The commission feared the "likelihood of public disorder should the parade proceed without conditions."
