THE PSNI is to boost security due to the “very real and serious security threat” posed by dissidents ahead of the UK general election on May 6th.
“We are aware that certain elements within society will want to cause disruption in the run-up to the elections . . . in Northern Ireland,” deputy chief constable Judith Gillespie said last night.
She said this had been seen most recently with the attack on Palace Barracks in Co Down, the North’s headquarters for British intelligence agency MI5.
“Assessments have been carried out on every polling and counting station and a number of vehicle check points will be in operation as well as an increased police presence.”
