The Department of Environment is considering whether to introduce measures to prevent people with a criminal record from obtaining Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licences.
The licensing of PSV drivers is the responsibility of the Garda Commissioner, who "must be satisfied that the applicant is a fit and proper person" to hold a licence and drive a PSV, according to Mr Bobby Molloy, the Minister of State for Environment. He promised to consult various groups about taxi service improvements.
