A Wexford town publican who showed premier division and international soccer matches without having the appropriate licence was ordered to pay royalties to the Sky television broadcasting company.

Mr James Brady, Brady's Bar, The Faythe, Wexford, appeared before Wexford Circuit Court on Monday for a breach of copyright.

British Sky Broadcasting Ltd., Grant Way, Isleworth, Middlesex, England, claimed the Wexford town publican was in breach of the Copyright and Related Rights Act, 2000, in permitting the broadcast of soccer matches, English premier division games and the Switzerland-Ireland European Nations cup game in his licensed premises on four separate dates between 2001 and 2003. The defendant was not in court and was not represented.

Judge Michael O'Shea ordered that the defendant pay €4,759.29 to the broadcasting company for loss of royalties, with immediate effect. He ordered the defendant also to pay the costs of the case.
