A supplier to the Department of the Taoiseach was very surprised to receive the following letter on harp-embossed Oifig an Taoisigh writing-paper. Dated February 15th, 2000, it read: "Dear XX, I am a member of the Social and Recreation Committee with the Department of the Taoiseach. On behalf of the committee I am approaching businesses to request a token contribution which we could use as spot prizes at our upcoming social events. I would be grateful if you would consider making a kind contribution of same. Best wishes, Yours sincerely, XX."
It will be remembered that the governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan was lacerated last year for daring to use the gaol's notepaper to solicit sponsorship for his GAA club.
