Punchestown racecourse, a spiritual home to equine devotees and concert goers, opens its doors to an altogether different fad this Bank Holiday weekend.
Biking enthusiasts from around the country will converge on the County Kildare venue this Sunday for the Irish Supermoto Championships.
Supermoto - a bizarre hybrid sport that combines tarmac racing with the rough and tumble of dirt-track racing - is relatively unknown to these shores but commands a sizeable following throughout Europe and in the United States.
Sunday's competition will be the fourth staging of the sport in Ireland - the championship runs over six legs - and Supermoto Ireland spokesman Hugh McEvoy hopes a successful day will lead to a permanent fixture on the European Circuit.
"Our ambition is to put Ireland on the map in the European Supermoto Circuit. The sport is gathering great importance in Ireland and next year we hope to have a European event staged here."
Over 150 competitors from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Britain are set to compete. Ady Smith, the twice British champion, and Ireland's leading 450cc rider David McKee are among the race favourites.
Sunday's action gets under way at 12 p.m. and run until 5 p.m. Adults €10. Children free. Saturday's qualifying session is free of charge.
