A flurry of betting this evening has installed former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier as the new favourite for the Republic of Ireland job.

The Frenchman moved to 1/3 with Paddy Power this evening and the market was subsequently suspended, but more intriguing is the movement on the betting exchanges, where the odds are controlled by punters rather than bookmakers.

With betfair.com Houllier was odds-on at one stage this evening but has since drifted slightly, with thus far perennial favourite Terry Venables in or around 2/1 and Liam Brady 5/1.

The odds on Steve Staunton's successor have fluctuated erratically, at times, since the Dundalk man's departure and it is quite likely that this evening's development will have reversed itself by the morning but with betdaq.com, another exchange, the Frenchman was 1/2.

There has, however, been no other indication to suggest that a decision has been made. Indeed, it is unclear whether the three-man headhunting panel of Don Howe, Ray Houghton and Don Givens will have selected a candidate in time for Tuesday's FAI board meeting after the latter admitted in Sofia this week that there were still interviews to be conducted.
