IRELAND IS set to get its first permanent purpose-built drive-in movie theatre with a pair of Cork businessmen planning to open a 170-car facility later this month in time to screen the latest Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Promoters John Caulfield and Stephen Redmond came up with the idea while attending a drive-in movie at the Cork Showgrounds five years ago as part of the Cork Film Festival and they began researching the idea for Movie Junction just outside Cork city.
Mr Caulfield said they had visited drive-in movie theatres in Germany where they were very popular. However they noted that the facilities were very much based on the 1950s American design so they decided to make some modifications.
Movie Junction, which is located on the former Youghal Carpets factory site at Killeaghcloyne near Carrigtwohill, will feature six rows of parking with each parking space sloped down and back so that the movie fans will be able to recline in their car seats.
