The Council for the West has challenged the incoming government to advance the case for regionalisation at European level.

In a statement, the council said EU funding in Ireland required to be more focused at areas of need. "While EU funding has kickstarted phenomenal development at national level, its impact on subregions has been less remarkable. Ireland needs to adopt a regionalisation plan with other European countries, allowing independent regions to lobby separately for finance", the statement added.
