A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 jolted Japan's southern Okinawa islands, a government agency said.
A tsunami warning for waves of up to two metres in some areas was issued after the quake at 8.30pm, Irish time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
