AN UNLIKELY candidate for charitable works, nicknamed the “Queen of Mean”, is to lend a helping hand at a west Cork community fundraising event next week.
Weakest Link presenter Anne Robinson, made famous by her assertive views and style of presenting, will take a break from her tough persona to open a silent auction in aid of the elderly in Schull next Saturday, August 22nd.
West Cork links to the tough-talking TV personality led to the extension of an invitation to Robinson to lend her support for the event.
The TV presenter, former journalist and author will open the auction at the Fastnet Marine and Sailing Centre on the Colla Road at 7.30pm, and is expected to spend the days following the event holidaying in the area.
It is hoped the presenter’s high profile will boost attendance and donations in order to build a social centre for the older residents in the Schull area.
A six degrees of separation-style link led Schull Community Care Association to Robinson, according to event organiser Julia Zagar.“Somebody knew somebody, who knew somebody who knew her. And she agreed. We’re absolutely delighted,” she said.
Ms Zagar said that international and local artists had contributed more than 120 pieces of collectible art in a variety of media, with something to suit all tastes and budgets. Tickets to the event are priced at €10 and include complimentary wine and entry to a prize draw.
