The Queen's University Uni-onist Association has severed all links with the Ulster Unionist Party and has condemned the policies of Mr David Trimble.

In a statement last night the association said that it had been a difficult decision, but it felt that it had no choice but to end the historic links, which go back more than 50 years.

"David Trimble has shown complete disregard for the views of the majority of unionists through his continued support for Sinn Féin/IRA remaining in government and through the continued flow of concessions to republicans," the statement said. "Our membership has suffered due to our links with the UUP and there is no longer any legitimate reason for us to remain a part of what is a farcical unionist party.

"There is no longer even an effective anti-agreement wing within the UUP. For anti-agreement unionists to remain within the UUP serves only to prop up the failed policies of David Trimble."

The association had five votes on the UUP's ruling body, the Ulster Unionist Council.

Its decision was welcomed by the deputy leader of the DUP, Mr Peter Robinson. It was obvious that "some of the brightest and best-educated from the next generation" were deserting the UUP, he said.
