The film-maker Mr Bob Quinn is considering whether to remain a member of the RTE Authority, following a move by the authority to appeal a High Court decision regarding the allocation of party political broadcasts during constitutional referendums.

The case was won by Mr Anthony Coughlan in the High Court.

The RTE Authority decided to appeal the action to the Supreme Court, which is expected to hear the case in the next few months.

In a letter to The Irish Times, Mr Quinn said he tried to persuade his colleagues not to appeal. "As this is the latest and most serious of my dissensions from RTE policy I must now consider the usefulness of my remaining on the RTE Authority."

Yesterday Mr Quinn said he wanted to consult friends and colleagues both inside and outside RTE. He said he had to consider what role he was serving.

It was an irritation to himself and everyone else, and it was questionable if he was able to achieve anything.

Mr Quinn has had other disagreements with his colleagues on the authority.

He wanted a ban on advertising directed at children, with which the authority disagreed. At that time he absented himself from a number of meetings in protest.
