World marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe was beaten into second place over 10 kilometres in Puerto Rico in her first race of the year.

Kenyan-born Dutch athlete Lornah Kiplagat clocked 30 minutes 41 seconds to defeat Radcliffe by four seconds in driving rain and high winds on Sunday, denying the Briton a third consecutive victory on the Caribbean island.

Last year, Radcliffe set a world record 30 minutes 21 seconds. She also won the event  in 2002.

Radcliffe (30) broke her world marathon record in London last year but then missed the Paris world championships due to illness and injury.
