Paula Radcliffe sliced eight seconds off the 10-kilometre road race world record with a stunning victory in Puerto Rico last night.

The 28-year-old moved clear of the pack at the four-and-a-half kilometre point and retained her title in a world record 30 minutes 21 seconds.

Previous record holder Asmae Laghzaoui finished second in a time of 31.36; Kenya's Esther Kiplagat was third in 32.53.

After battling with Laghzaoui for the first four kilometres, Radcliffe quickened her pace to finish the first five kilometres in 14.47, leaving her closest competitor more than 100m behind.

"I knew from the halfway point on that I was way below my best time," said an excited Radcliffe after the race.

"Once I took the lead, and left her [Laghzaoui] behind, I focused on running at a pace that would enable me to break the record," she added.

The win strengthens Radcliffe's position as the world's leading female distance runner.
