Rail passengers are being encouraged to plan their journeys well in advance this weekend after Iarnród Éireann announced extensive timetable changes caused by work at Dublin's Heuston Station.

The opening of four new platforms at the station, along with work on a new signalling system, will see west and south-bound services disrupted today and tomorrow.

Timetable changes are in effect for all services to Cork, Galway, Limerick, Westport, Waterford and Kildare. Passengers are advised to check with Iarnród Éireann before starting their journeys.

Track improvements on the Ennis-to-Limerick line will see a bus service provided for passengers between both stations.

In Dublin, DART services between Howth and Howth Junction will be suspended from 9 p.m. today until 9 p.m. on Sunday due to maintenance work.

Little disruption - apart from the ususal - is expected in other weekend travel, with the State's roads, ports and airports predicting a relatively quiet two days.

But motorists are advised to be aware of the Fairyhouse race meeting on Saturday and another meeting in Naas on Sunday.

Dublin and Shannon airports are both expecting busy weekends, though no major flight delays are anticipated. All ferries are running to schedule.

In weather terms, the weekend will begin dry, with clear and sunny spells for the rest of today and into Saturday, and temperatures in the range of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.

However, it will turn wet and windy on Saturday night, and this will continue into Sunday, with brighter and more showery weather setting in on Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the range of 7 to 9 degrees Celsius.

Strong to gale force winds will set in on Sunday evening, but it is expected to remain dry into Monday morning.
