An independent body responsible for rail safety has been proposed by Minister for Public Enterprise Ms Mary O'Rourke in a consultation paper published by the department today.

All rail services used by the public, including the proposed Metro and LUAS systems, would be subject to inspection, investigation and enforcement if the proposal for the rail safety authority becomes law.

"The new enlarged inspectorate should be established as an independent agency. I took this view to provide independent assurance to the public and to ensure transparency in decision-making, and to separate decision-making on railway safety from shareholder and market regulatory considerations," the minister said.

The department invites interested parties to submit written views by Friday March 2nd.
