When Luas is up and running, it should be properly supervised with obvious evidence of security, the president of the Irish Countrywomen's Association has said.

Ms Eva Coyle welcomed the Government's proposals, but said security, particularly for women, had not received adequate attention in the debate. Ms Olive Braiden of the Rape Crisis Centre said she hoped that by the time Luas was built society's attitudes towards violence against women would have moved on, so that it would be less of a problem.

She said young men were also at risk of violence in public places.
