Cricket: South Africa's hopes of squaring the series against Australia suffered a setback on a rain-hit fourth day of the third Test in Sydney.

Showers limited play to only 20 overs and three balls as the Proteas moved on to 94 for three in their second innings - extending their lead to 186 with only one day left.

Herschelle Gibbs blasted a superb 67 off only 74 balls as the tourists went out for quick runs in order to set Australia a target.

Resuming on four for one after an hour's delay due to rain, the Proteas lost Graeme Smith early on when he was controversially given out lbw by umpire Billy Bowden after Glenn McGrath's appeal.

The skipper had made only five when he face the seventh ball of the day - which replays showed would have passed inches over the stumps.

With South Africa on six for two, Gibbs was joined by Jacques Kallis and the pair survived a few scares but were still together at lunch with Kallis, playing the anchor role, unbeaten on four having faced 28 balls.

After the interval only six overs were possible before the showers began again but Gibbs was run out during the session.

Gibbs called Kallis for a quick single but, after the pair hesitated, Brad Hodge's direct hit ran out him out at the non-striker's end.

They had put on 86 and only two more runs were added before rain ended play for the day with Kallis not out 14 and Ashwell Prince still to face a ball.

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning by 184 runs in Melbourne last week.
