Last night's heavy rainfalls over the southern part of the country marked the end of the stormy period as drier weather is forecast from today, according to the weather experts.

The heavy rain over Munster and southern Leinster will die out by this morning.

Today there will be a mix of cloud and bright spells and it will be largely dry apart from a few passing light showers. Early mist will clear and there will be a moderate northerly breeze.

Ms Sarah O'Neill of Met Éireann said: "The heavy rains will ease off all over the country and we will have a much drier period with maybe just a few light showers."
