European champions Real Madrid and Leeds United became the first clubs to qualify forthe quarter-finals of the Champions League tonight.

Leeds's 4-1 win over Anderlecht in Brussels and Real's 2-2 draw with Lazio in Rome means that neither team can finish outside the top twopositions in Group D.

Bayern Munich were left on the verge of qualifying thanks to their 3-0 win at Spartak Moscow which consolidated their first place in Group C.

Arsenal's 1-1 draw in Group C with Olympique Lyon at Highbury left the chase for second spot wide open. Arsenal are on five points, Lyon four andSpartak three.

The positions in Groups A and B, played on Tuesday night, are less clear-cut with Manchester United, Valencia and Sturm Graz all still incontention in Group A.

All four teams in Group B - Galatasaray, AC Milan, Deportivo Coruna and Paris St Germain - are still in with a chance of making the last eightfrom their section.
