Golf:American Cameron Beckman tied the course-record at the Byron Nelson Championship to earn a share of the lead with a 34-year-old PGA Tour rookie who has battled injures his entire career.
Beckman had to play 22 holes yesterday after his opening round was suspended because of bad weather and he birdied half of them en route to a nine-under-par 61 in the second round that equalled a course record at the Four Seasons TPC.
"I didn't know you could shoot 61 on this course, to be honest, but obviously I did and I'm thrilled to death," he said after earning a share of the halfway lead at the €5.1million tournament with fellow American Blake Adams (64).
With a 10 under total of 130, Beckman and Adams will carry a one-shot lead over Australian Jason Day into the third round. Australian Steve Elkington and American Jeff Overton were two shots back of the co-leaders.
Beckman, who captured the Mayakoba Championship in Mexico in March and missed the cut in eight other events this year, said he was not bothered by his early start to make up for the unfinished holes from Thursday's round.
"I hit a lot of greens and putted great and was just real comfortable off the tee," he said. "I had one of those days where everything was clicking. I didn't have any bogeys and never really had a chance to make one all day."
Joining Beckman was Adams, a rookie on the tour from Georgia who ranks 118th on the money list and has struggled with injuries throughout his career.
"I've had a bulging disc in my back that hampered me forever, I've got arthritis of a 60-year-old, three bone spurs, a cyst and all the collagen is worn out in my left hip," said Adams. "I've been beat and battered my whole life." he said after a
bogey-free 64.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Dallas amateur Jordan Spieth made the cut in his first tour start, seven strokes off the pace.
