Additional evidence was served yesterday on the former assistant Dublin city and county manager, Mr George Redmond, who is charged with corruption while in office.

Mr Redmond (76) had been served with the book of evidence in the case when he first appeared in Dublin District Court last month. He was remanded on his own bail of £900 until yesterday for service of additional evidence.

Mr Patrick Geraghty, solicitor for the DPP, told the court yesterday it had been hoped that in the meantime Mr Redmond's solicitor, Mr Anthony Harris, could have been supplied with the additional evidence informally, so that a preliminary examination could take place. However, that was not possible, and the evidence was only ready to be served yesterday.

Mr Geraghty said Mr Harris had also sought better copies of statements provided in the book of evidence and information in relation to whether any of the witnesses in the case had criminal convictions. Both matters were being addressed by the State, which wanted a further remand until the end of July.

Judge David Anderson said he was concerned that the information required would not be received by July and it would therefore be better to put the case in for mention in June.

Mr Harris, for Mr Redmond, asked that his client be excused from attending the next hearing. However, the State was not agreeable to this, as he was on bail.

Judge Anderson remanded Mr Redmond on continuing bail to June 26th but refused to excuse him from attending.

Mr Redmond faces four charges under the Prevention of Corruption Acts, 1906 and 1916, and under the Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act, 1889.

The offences allegedly occurred while he worked for Dublin County Council in the 1980s.

The first two charges relate to the sale of a strip of land in Palmerstown by the council to Mr Brendan Fassnidge, a garage owner. It is alleged that, between December 1987 and March 1988, Mr Redmond corruptly received a gift of money from Mr Fassnidge as an inducement or reward in relation to the sale. He is also accused of accepting a gift of money as an inducement for showing favour to an individual in relation to this transaction.

The other two charges relate to the compulsory purchase by the council of 167 acres of land at Buzzardstown and Coolmine between June 1985 and June 1986.

Mr Redmond, it is alleged, corruptly received £10,000 as an inducement or reward for doing or forbearing to do anything about the compulsory purchase order and showing favour to someone in relation to this transaction.
