Debates are out of tune, says Rock the Vote
CAMPAIGN GROUP Rock the Vote has criticised both the Yes and No camps for what it describes as the "poor quality of debate" on the Lisbon Treaty so far.
"Rock the Vote challenges both sides to stop scare mongering and use the days left until June 12th to have some meaningful debate," director Gearóid O'Rourke said.
"So far there has been a very heated debate going on between the Yes and No campaigns, but it has not been a very enlightening one. Focusing on each other's campaigns and not addressing the real issues at hand will only serve to alienate the voting public.
"Young people in particular are tired of partisan rhetoric," he added.
The group has organised a national roadshow - Driving the Vote - to raise awareness of the referendum among young voters. Yesterday the campaign visited Ennis, Limerick and Tralee where they were joined by local bands.
Organisers say they are targeting what they call the "Euro generation".
"They have grown up with the EU as a constant present in the Irish political sphere. It is very important that these people have their say on Europe," Mr O'Rourke said.
