Housing: Because of the increase in the numbers arriving recently and the lack of affordable accommodation in Dublin, the Government is, with the help of local authorities and health boards, to seek suitable housing elsewhere in the State and directly provide it.

Welfare and Health: These are also to be provided through local health boards.

Food and Clothing: The Department's announcement is not specific on this. However, its reference to distinguishing direct provision from "a totally cash-based system", and the fact that the UK is moving to vouchers, makes it likely that a voucher system will be introduced for food and clothing, and cash donations reduced to insignificance.

Deportations: Earlier this week, the Minister signed the regulations under the 1999 Immigration Act allowing deportations. Several hundred letters are now going out asking asylum-seekers who have been refused asylum to state reasons on humanitarian grounds why they should not be deported.
