Southeast

More heavy snowfall last night and this morning made road conditions even worse across large sections of the southeast.

Councils worked hard to keep roads open and safe but were fighting a difficult battle against the elements, with even the Dublin-Waterford motorway through Co Carlow in dangerous condition along with busy routes like the Gorey by-pass in Co Wexford.

Parts of Waterford city were described as "extremely hazardous" after significant snowfall.

In Kilkenny, following over 15cm of snow, the county council sent 12 trucks to Cork to take delivery of salt supplies for the coming few days, while the out-patient clinics at St Luke's Hospital remained closed today.

Carlow County Council said roads in the area were worse yesterday than anytime over the last week, with Carlow town impassable for much of the day. "Conditions remain harsh," the council said.

Its priority was to keep the M9 motorway, access from the motorway to Carlow and the national secondary routes open to traffic.

Some of the bus services between Waterford and Dublin had to be cancelled by Bus Eireann while the Dublin Airport-Rosslare route had to be restricted to Gorey.

Flights at Waterford Regional Airport were suspended for the day but management were hoping that normal service could resume tomorrow morning.

While some parts of the region experienced a thaw throughout the day, more snow is expected tonight.

Midlands

Although most main roads are open and treated, driving conditions remain hazardous throughout the midlands.

Motorists are being advised to exercise extreme care on the N80 between Two-Mile Bridge and the Offaly border in Co Laois. The 'Cut' Road between Mountrath and Clonaslee remains closed to traffic.

All main routes in Co Westmeath are treated and passable with extreme caution. The N6/M6 between Kinnegad and Athlone is operating on one lane in each direction. A similar system remains in place on the N4/M4 between Kinnegad and Longford.

All major routes have been salted in Co Offaly where the Kinnitty Mountrath Road remains closed due to heavy snow.

Train and bus services are running in the region but delays can be expected on many bus routes in the midlands, particularly those around Athlone.
