The grandmother and great-grandmother of a four-year-old twin girl, who died in a four-vehicle pile-up in Co Limerick on Monday, are in a stable condition in hospital.
The dead child was named as Jade O'Reilly of Loughshinny Park, Skerries, Co Dublin, daughter of Mr Anthony O'Rourke and Ms Nina O'Reilly. Her twin sister Erin was unhurt.
Jade's grandmother, Ms Connie O'Reilly (50), Hampton Cove, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, was driving the car and her great-grandmother, Ms Olive Morgan (74), Clonard Street, Balbriggan, was a front-seat passenger. The twins were in the back.
Nine people were taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, including the driver of a truck which was involved in the collision with the three cars at Murphy's Cross at the Adare-to-Ballingarry junction. They were all released after treatment.
All four vehicles were travelling towards Adare.
The three cars were carrying family members travelling in convoy after spending a long weekend in Killarney. Gardaí are investigating a report that the traffic may have slowed down to allow a car out at the junction when the pile-up occurred
Garda Sgt Vincent McCoy, Askeaton, said it was not a particularly dangerous spot.
"There have been accidents in the past, but not fatal. Traffic has to slow at the junction to allow a driver out to the main road. There can be a build-up of traffic in seconds as it is a very busy road."
He expressed the Garda's sympathy of the Garda Síochána to the extended family of the deceased, whose death "was a tragedy for all concerned".
A post-mortem examination was carried out on the girl and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
