Police in Washington DC are trying to determine whether a skull and other human bones found in a park yesterday are the remains of White House intern Ms Chandra Levy (24), who disappeared more than a year ago.

"The possibility exists that it is a female, based on some preliminary work," Washington's deputy police chief, Mr Terrance Gainer, said in Rock Creek.

Ms Levy, a former US Bureau of Prisons intern, disappeared on May 1st, 2001.

Someone walking a dog found the remains around 9:30 a.m, a police spokeswoman said.

Police Chief Charles Ramsey said the remains were found in more than one location in a heavily wooded area of the sprawling park.

Ms Levy's case drew wide attention when the name of Congressman Gary Condit surfaced in the investigation.

Mr Condit (54) and married, reportedly told police he and Ms Levy were romantically involved, but acknowledged only a close relationship in his public comments.

Mr Condit has denied any involvement in Ms Levy's disappearance and police have consistently said he is not a suspect in what officially remains a missing person investigation.

Police searched the park repeatedly in the first few months after Ms Levy disappeared. Her apartment was not far from the park and she often exercised there. - (AP)
