The body of the last missing Irish tsunami victim has been formally identified in Thailand.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed today the Thai authorities have idenfified the remains of Michael Murphy (23) by using DNA techniques.

The science graduate from Ballyconnigar, Blackwater in Co Wexford, had been travelling in Khao Lak in Thailand when the tsunami struck. He last spoke with his family on Christmas day.

His family have been notified, and Mr Murphy's body is expected to be flown home for burial early next week.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, extended condolences on behalf of the Government to the family.

In a statement he said: "The terrible events of the tsunami in southern Asia last December claimed four young Irish lives. I would hope that the families can find some relief in knowing that all have now been located and identified. I would also pray that this will allow those close to them to find some closure at their tragic loss."

"Our thoughts and prayers this weekend are with the bereaved families and friends of Eilís Finnegan, Connor Keightley, Lucy Coyle and Michael Murphy," he added.
