Berlin - German government and opposition politicians united yesterday to condemn one of the country's Catholic Church leaders who claimed that gay couples could not form families, Denis Staunton reports. Speaking on a television chat show, Archbishop Johannes Dyba of Fulda criticised the government's plans to give gay partnerships some of the same rights as married couples.

"Twenty years ago, only the mentally disturbed believed that people of the same sex could form a family," he said.
